We’ve been working with Renishaw over the last few months to produce some exciting and very dynamic video content. We started our collaboration with a product video for their metal additive manufacturing system, the RenAM 500Q.

Headquartered in Gloucestershire, UK, Renishaw is a world leading supplier of measuring systems and production systems. Its products give high accuracy and precision, gathering data to provide customers and end users with traceability and confidence in what they’re making. This technology also helps customers to innovate their products and processes.

However, this doesn’t mean that the seriousness of the subject matter we are filming needs to be matched with formal, stiff content. In fact, it is even more important that the content is engaging and that we film with drama and panache.

Of the filming and editing process, our videographer Crispin said ….

“When we arrived, I felt like I was immediately lost in such a huge building with so many cool rooms. It was really good to learn about a world I knew nothing about. It’s always nice editing when the client is in the room as you get constant feedback and any questions you can ask straight away without waiting for the email back, which is the reason that we like to encourage our clients to pop in, grab a coffee and bring on the amends!”

It’s okay to break out of the box

When the Nomads arrived at Renishaw’s HQ in Wotton-Under-Edge for the recce, the production team were immediately reminded of hot TV show, Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things’ and you can see why when you look at their labs, which look like they’re straight from the set of a sci-fi movie (both depicted below).

The filming brief was to capture engaging, dynamic b-roll and talking heads about the RenAM 500Q to create an updated product video for Renishaw to use on YouTube and also at exhibitions in Europe and the USA. They wanted their updated video content to highlight the benefits of their machine for customers and its applications across industries like aerospace, healthcare and automotive.

Whilst the video’s main objective was to articulate the product’s USPs, it was also important the video had excellent engagement. In our recce/pre-production meeting, we looked at similar videos in the industry comparing what worked well and what didn’t. The more that the individual videos engaged directly with the more dramatic, exciting applications of the machine, then the more entertaining and enjoyable the video was to watch. Hence our desire to gently nudge the filming style of the video’s B-roll in the direction of Stranger Things as well as showing the intricacy and precision of the builds that the RenAM 500Q can produce.

We achieved a good balance of gently nodding towards Stranger Things, whilst also delivering a highly polished and professional video suitable for a global corporate like Renishaw plc.

Ella Rees, Marketing Communications Manager at Renishaw’s Additive Manufacturing Division, said “I’m delighted with the video’s visual impact and how well it gets across the RenAM 500Q’s selling points. Nomadic have been dedicated in working with us to get to the best possible version of this video and I feel the results speak for themselves.”

We hope you’ll enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed making it!
